I animate the math hiding in ordinary things: why fraud investigators check the first digit of a number, why your coastline's length depends on who's measuring it. No lecture halls, no problem sets, just the parts of math that stuck with me.

I'm David, a final year Electrical and Electronics Engineering student in Ife, Nigeria. QuiteBasicMath started because I kept running into math ideas in my coursework that felt too good to leave in a textbook: elegant, a little strange, and completely disconnected from how they're usually taught.

Every video starts the same way: I find one specific, slightly odd question (why does 1 show up more often than 9 as a leading digit in real data?) and build an animation around answering just that, in under a minute. I use Manim, the same animation library behind 3Blue1Brown's videos, so the visuals do the explaining instead of me talking over a whiteboard.

I'm building toward a career as a quant developer, so this channel is also where I keep my instinct for finding the interesting question in a pile of numbers sharp, one video at a time.

Benford's Law

Real world numbers don't distribute their first digits evenly. About 30% start with 1, and almost none start with 9. Forensic accountants use this to catch fraud before anyone looks at a single receipt.

The Coastline Paradox

Measure a coastline with a 100km ruler, then a 1km ruler, and you'll get two different answers, and the second one will always be longer. It's not a measurement error, it's a real property of jagged shapes, and it's the idea that led to fractals.
